Afternoon tea and food galore in Taipei

As much as I love the British sophistication in art museums (forget it, they already consider me somewhat of a local) and as much as I miss the laid-back and multi-cultural fun in Toronto, Taiwan is one of my favourite holiday destinations. Why? What country can blend wonderful history with an eclectic mix of themed restaurants, Japanese/English cafes with the best night market scene?

Taipei is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Taiwan for its hustle and bustle and easy convenience to get around. Since most tour guides would have covered major highlights such as Palace Museum and Taipei 101, here’s a guide to the little known afternoon tea and cafe places:

Modern Toilet Restaurant
A bathroom/toilet themed restaurant, Modern Toilet Restaurant is a cute place that gives a refreshing take of dining in a bathroom-like atmosphere (of course you don’t dine in the bathroom). All utensils and seats are centered around this theme and food comes in both Western and Taiwanese options. It is a unique experience and provides a heap of laughs, but don’t expect too much on the food quality.

Eslite
Eslite is a bookstore/lifestyle concept store with some stores that open for 24 hours. However, the plethora of food options is also a highlight, with everything from light snacks such as Agnes B. cafe and Rose Tea Room, to Chinese tea places such as Ten Ren so you can always relax in midst of another reading session. What’s better is that with this Eslite, it connects to the food court of another department store.

Sparkle Spa

Part of the reason why I like spas is because they will always provide complimentary food and drink, and Sparkle Spa is no exception. Located inside a commercial building (which could be difficult to find and may require a cab ride), Sparkle Spa is a hidden gem among Taiwanese celebrities because of the privacy it provides. While it doesn’t have overnight stay options, a beautiful lobby with individual steam room, bath tub, beauty parlour, treatment area and the complimentary chocolate fondue with tea is more than enough as a haven to unwind amidst of the hustle and bustle of Taipei.

Victoria House
I freakin’ love afternoon tea. Ok, I like lunch and dinner too, but what course has decadent and indulgent desserts topped off by a soothing sip of tea, or playful and unique desserts for a quick fix? None but afternoon tea. I was feeling indulgent at that point and Victoria House offered the perfect solution! There are 3-tiered or 4-tiered afternoon tea options to choose from but they could be a bit too much. Mine was tiramisu, lavendar biscuits, angel cake and chocolate sticks with apple tea.

PS You have to make an appointment on the internet but their old site shut down so I am not sure if they are closed. 😦
If they are, my other take would be Smith & Hsu or Emperor Love.

One of Jay Chou’s lesser known restaurants besides Mr. Jay and Deja Vu (I will update when I FINALLY found the name on Google). Whereas his other restaurants feature Italian cuisine, this one sells one of my favourite Japanese dishes: tonkatsu! Here’s an interesting twist though: unlike other tonkatsu stores that use the Japanese tonkatsu sauce, it has a unique blend of carrot and sesame sauce with rice and miso soup.

PS For all the Jay fans: Jay opened another restaurant! It’s called Fujiwara tofu house with the AE86 in Initial D movie, please go check that out if you can!
